Sad loss of an inspirational and hardworking SRGC member
« on: June 21, 2011, 11:02:39 AM »
We have been greatly saddened to learn of the death of Jean Band, of Pitcairngreen, Perthshire, who will be familiar to all Scottish Members of our Club.
A message from her daughter, forumist Susan, tells us that Jean passed away , peacefully and at home, yesterday, 20th  June 2011.

Jean was, with Susan, husband Tom and other members of the Family, a stalwart of the Perth Group and active in all sorts of club activities. The hospitality given to speakers and other visitors to the  area is  well known as is the beauty of Jean's decorative and very productive garden.
Jean's contribution to the running and supply of the refreshments at Perth Shows and for many, many, Annual General Meetings of the SRGC is legendary..... her capacity for hard work and her baking skills would mark her as a star at any time but Jean's devotion to the Club over so many years is as remarkable as it is praiseworthy.

Jean was a wonderful woman, clever, caring and capable and loved and admired by all who knew her.
For the SRGC  Jean was one of those hardworking, considerate members without whom the work of the club would grind to a  halt and be by far the poorer as regards the camaraderie of the Members.

Her loss will be keenly felt by all who knew and loved her but we  can only sympathise with her beloved family and send them our fond condolences on this loss. All our thoughts are with them at this very sad time.

At Jean's own request there will be no funeral.

Jean will be sorely missed.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news.  My thoughts are with Susan and her family.

To add to Maggi's excellent comments above, I'd like to add that Jean's cakes were legendary, Sue Gill organised a visit to Scottish gardens for Plant Heritage a few years ago, and we visited Jean's wonderful garden then, and there was a lot of elbowing for those delicious cakes I remember well.  Although I didn't know her well, I did appreciate all the hard work and dedication that Jean gave to the SRGC.  Again, my sincere condolences.

SRGC President Liz Mills is away on holiday at the moment. Madam Prezz would otherwise have been expressing her thoughts on the loss of Jean, I know.

In other times Jean and Susan might well have been off on the same trip to the Dolomites with SRGC Friends..... another sad thought.

Susan, I'm so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. No matter what one's age, while one's mother is still alive and handy, there is always a shoulder to cry on, a source of comfort and strength. Once that is gone, I certainly found, even though my father and sister were still with me, a great feeling of support and unconditional love were gone and suddenly one is alone in the world and having to be that strong person for everyone else. I send you my warmest sympathy and support.

Lesley has just said most of the things that come to me. To lose your mum is like losing part of yourself. My thoughts are with you Susan and your family at this sad time.

I'm so sorry not to have gotten to visit Jean when we were in Scotland this year.
Susan took me to see Jean and her wonderful garden when I was there in 2007 and it was a delight.
My condolences to Susan and her family.
