Clemens Heidger's & Josh Westrich's new book Schneeglöckchen
« on: September 13, 2011, 03:05:25 AM »
I just had a note from a German galanthophile friend today and he says this new book should be available shortly.  Clemens Heidger of Hanover is an avid treeman, Galanthhophile and collector.  Photos are by Josh Westrich who you may recall did the excellent photographs in the Helen Ballard tribute book.

More bedtime reading.

Merciful heavens, another 'drop book?!
I see this one is promising garden-worthy plants - that's a plus point... and the text is in German, English, French and Dutch..... so that's good too.

Interesting that the garden-worthy plants are considered to be the following!

Angelique, Anglesey Abbey, Armine, Atkinsii, Augustus, Bill Bishop, Blewbury Tart, Blonde Inge, Carlos aus Santana (nivalis x elwesii), Cedric’s Prolific, Colossus, Erway, byzantinus graublau, byzantinus hellgrün, byzantinus x nivalis Zweler JL, elwesii Ballon-Form, elwesii UF Gesicht, elwesii ex Schloss Wolfsburg, gracilis, gracilis Ballon-Form, gracilis groß, gracilis virescent, niv var scharlockii, plicatus ‘Flora Pleno’, Galatea, George Elwes, G75, gracilis Highdown form, Hill Poë, Hippolyta, Hörup, James Backhouse, Jaquenetta, John Gray, Ketton, Lady Beatrice Stanley, Lady Elphinstone, Merlin, Primrose Warburg, Pusey Green Tips, Robin Hood, Rodmarton, S.Arnott, Sophie North, Spindlestone Surprise, St Anne’s, Straffan, Viradapice, Wendy’s Gold, Yamanlar.

Some there I have not heard of, and some that people do have difficulty in keeping...

Perhaps Hagen can enlighten us?

My dear Brian, hello Davey,
I never saw a Gg virescens, I only saw a pic of Gg virescens.
What is the problem? Gg do not like to split. Mostly there are only single plants.
If you would like to increase a clump, Gg isn`t a good species.
Why do you would like a Gg virescens?

Hagen I wondered if you knew of a virescent Galanthus gracilis as you have so many different snowdrops to the ones we grow, as it is mentioned in this new book we wondered if it was commonly available in Europe.  My original comment was really that I found some of this choice of plants to be a puzzle.  As an example, quite a few people seem to find 'Sophie North' difficult to keep - not my idea of garden worthy!

I have to agree, Brian. There were a fair few in the list that I would not myself have listed as easy, garden-worthy plants - indeed, some of those listed I'd say are decidedly miffy. Perhaps there's a semantic difference with the languages and/or the translation? Though I can't really see how there could be.

Hello Brian,
may be, the word gartenwürdig is not correct for all the drops, we will get to see in the book. This word shall/should catch clueless costumers. But we real galanthophile have a background knowledge.
I hope we will get a fine book with fabulous pics and good descriptions.
It`s a book of Josh Westrich (photograph), with a little help from......Joe Cocker Clemens Heidger and his collection.

Davey,
I like Gg so much and I like virescens too. And I would like Gg virescens.
But it is always a collectors plant.
Not common and not  normal garden worthy.

This time will come Davey, and then  we will get twinscaled bulbs of Ggv, like the yellow RON MACKENZIE. The only thing we need is patience.
But we will get no clump in our garden ever. :)

Just for you, the book has just arrived and here is the relevant virescent gracilis text and photos.  A large format book - the pages are just over 30cm in height. Apologies for the presentation, I had to put the book on the floor to photograph it!
