Crocus goulimyi MELJ9562
« on: October 14, 2011, 11:24:19 AM »
It has been suggested several times to me that I should name Crocus goulimyi MELJ9562, as the suggestion was made again yesterday I have decided to call it Crocus goulimyi 'Agia Sofia' after the church on Monemvasia near to the place where the original plant was found.
I would bre grateful if those that have received the plant from me could change their label accordingly. Many thanks.
Attached are a couple of photos taken this morning.

Melvyn,
since this is rather an important change, I've split it to its own topic.

Surely a delightful crocus and worthy of a "proper" name  8)

Very distinct, Melvyn and, as Maggi says, well worth naming.  8)

Very nice form indeed.  I can think of at least two NCH's who would be happy to have it in their collection .... maybe DBS has it already?  As always with these special forms I am interested to know if it comes true from seed.  Even if it did not, introducing these genes into any stock would be sure to turn out some nice seedlings in future generations.

PS Can I use these images in the next Crocus Group Newsletter?

Glad to see it published - and named, too - Melvyn. If I'm not mistaken Agai Sofia (αγια σοφια) is Greek for "Holy Wisdom". Seems appropriate on so many levels with this crocus and your naming of it. To echo everyone else, it is beautiful - hauntingly glorious and unique.

I have had this for a few years and it has built up to 7 bulbs, it is a lovely thing. We must get it up before joint rock and get the award it deserves.

Melvyn it is fantastic, and such a nice addition to this, otherwise not very variable species!
