Greenhouse Fan
« on: November 16, 2011, 05:34:32 PM »
I require a fan for the greenhouse to increase the ventilation in it so that I can reduce condensation and all the problems it creates, as I live on top of 150ft cliffs by the sea removing glass permanently is not a sensibly idea.  Any suggestion for a good quality fan would be much appreciated.

I use a 15 watt 230 V mini ventilator for a shower
this one has a hygrometer feeler
which shut down the ventilator if the humidity goes low

Thanks for that, I never thought about using one of them and they are a lot cheaper as well, than a dedicated greenhouse one.

Our glasshouse fans were recycled out of old fridges etc .... I think Ian has written about it somewhere... I'll ask him later.... the set-up looks awful, but it is all safety protected and works well.

Hi Neil

Yes the fans I use all came out of beer coolers that were being replaced. They use little power and are continuous rated so they can run all day every day - as they did when we were growing alpines in pots.

You can also see an old expelair that I fitted into the end of the house and that was also recycled.

Another version is a glasshouse fan heater that is contained inside a plastic tube. It has a thermostat and can deliver heat if required or it can just circulate air. I bought that one new some 25 years ago.
This is the company I got it from - I also got our mist unit there at around the same time.

Hi Neil,
For cheapness I use standard desk fans - you can buy these from as little as £8 to £10. I wrap the base with the controls in a plastic bag so they don't get wet and then I just leave them running 24/7. They usually last at least 3 years used in this way. Dedicated greenhouse fans can be ridiculously expensive (typically vetween £60 to £150) and in my experience they don't necessarily last any longer than a desk fan. For the same price you could buy anywhere between 6 to 15 desk fans that would last between them 18 to 45 years!
