Galanthus December 2011
« on: December 01, 2011, 01:23:27 PM »
Here my last flowering Galanthus reginae-olgae ssp. reginae-olgae
from a collection in Sicily
started to flower yesterday
He looks more happy today with a little sunshine one hour ago
This one flowers still much earlier as my Galanthus reginae-olgae ssp. vernalis
they just show there nose above the ground

There are other Galanthus reginae-olgae ssp. reginae-olgae flowering
but not from my Sicilian collection
most of them are early flowering
I hope this one is multiplying this year
It's a nice small one

Standing at the barbeque this evening I spied a 'Cambridge' in flower.  This one was not close to the house.

My friend's 'Peg Sharples' that was in flower last week turned out to be 'Canbridge' as well. The slugs had made off with the flower before I got to see it.

Hopefully all will continue to survive.

Snowdrop noses are up throughout the garden here. Some are quite advanced.  And no frost for another week or more. This is very distressing even through they seem to be able to take anything winter can throw at them.

I know exactly what you mean John W.  There are so many noses through here that shouldn't be showing until 2012!

1) On the other hand - 'Remember Remember' the 5th of December...   ;D

2)  a final pic of 'Sheds and Outhouses' (I must admit to being surprised, when I posted a picture previously, that not one person commented on how this was a great addition to the early flowers.  It is the only one I have seen at this time of year with green on the outers - and probably my favourite of this season so far).

3)  not a snowdrop - but I was very happy to entertain art600 here this morning for garden, cyclamen, snowdrops and soup - Arthur commented on this 'Kniphofia thomsonii var snowdonii' - so I thought it might be worth posting a picture.

I send out a request.... if anyone reading this has something other than R.O. that flower at this time of year in your garden then PLEASE do consider sending me a personal message to let me know (and maybe we can do a swap). I really don't care if it has a 'name'!

Any snowdrop that can flower in November/December really is helping to alleviate the early onset of my horrible :'( winter blues.

I checked the snowdrops today and saw Sentinel, Mrs Mc,gracilis Highdown and Diggory are doing well. Also the undefinable snowdrop i found last year is showing a nose.

Speaking personally, I got so preoccupied with the weird name that I didn't pay the flower close attention.  Do you know how it came to be so-named, John?
Almost in Scotland.

One aspect of my breeding programme is trying to raise more early-flowering snowdrops to extend the season back into autumn and early winter. The first results are looking promising. Doesn't help you right now, John, but soon...soon...  :)
