Crocus December 2011

Just recently new Crocus species was described from Macedonia (former Yugoslavia) -
Crocus jablanicensis
- close to cvijicii and veluchensis but white, with white stigma and nude throat. By picture it really resembles white cvijicii, but between cvijicii white specimens are 1-2 per million yellows. Crocus jablanicensis population at
locus classicus
reported as pure white without yellow ones and with white stigma. Although I suppose that mine white cvijicii has white stigmas, too (can't check my pictures at present as I'm in hospital now). Just the glabrous throat makes the main difference between both (by my opinion - I didn't see living material). Veluchensis has different shape of flower.

Forgot to mention another feature separating new Crocus jablanicensis from Crocus cvijicii - it is much longer stigma - well exceeding anthers as you can see on attached picture. In cvijicii stigma rarely slightly exceeds anthers.

Janis , glad to hear that the surgery on your hand was successful , so you will be able to post even more of your most informative and interesting articles in the Forum ,like the new white Crocus . No doubt there are still new species in Turkey waiting to be discovered .

I wish you the best outcome for your hand surgery Janis. Our hands are so vitally important. To everyone of course but especially to someone handling bulbs, seeds and plants all the time.
That is a wonderful crocus and looks like something really special to greet the northern Christmas, perhaps with snow.

What a lovely discovery. Thanks for sharing with us in spite of being in hospital. May I also wish you a speedy recovery.

Yesterday in my postbox came nice parcel with several books from Slovenian - there were two about snowdrops, one about CVyclamens, one about 200th Anniversary of Ljubljana Botanical Garden, but for me most important was book written by
Dr. Joze Bavcon - Crocus in Slovenia
, 2010. ISBN 978-961-6822-04-6
Front cover and scan of one of inner pages in attached pictures.

It is bilingual - half in Slovenian and other half - identical translation in English. In total 176 pages. English part starts on page 88. Picture captions translated in Slovenian part, too.
