Galanthus IDentification - can you help?
« on: January 19, 2012, 06:06:02 PM »
Hi there,
Wondering if anyone can help with ID?

It's been out for about three weeks now - very tall - 8- 10 inches. Big clump and a big flower - leaves are long but not wide. I've attached images which may help. It's very different in stature to everything else there - would love to know if it is named? In looking at the pictures online it most looks like S. Arnott or Magnet???

Thanks

Hello Des, not seen you around for a while!
I've resized your photos for anyone who finds the original size a bit to large for their screen....

Merciful heavens... that's a lot of weeds, surely!  You'll be feeling pleased with yourself for that work.

Hi Des,

Down the road from you, here in Waterford.  Here is a photograph of G. 'Magnet' for comparison. Your snowdrops certainly seems to match to me. It is just into flower here at the moment.

I'm not sure the pedicel is right for Magnet.  You can see how the flowers dangle below an longish curved pedicel in Paddy's photo whereas Des' snowdrop has an upright pedicel with a sharp curve right at the end.  It's the gently curved pedicel that is the particular feature of Magnet, so if it hasn't got that then it isn't Magnet.
Almost in Scotland.

I thought it was the longish droopy pedicel that was Magnet's sign?
Didn't know about any angles. :-\

I have the feeling that the flowers in Des' photos are very newly opened though... in some I can see how the pedicel is beginning to extend and it looks pretty droopy to me.

Hi,
Thanks for info - I'm learning fast. I've attached an image that shows the flowers more open. Maggi - not sure if the image size is right, can you link me to image size requirements when you have a moment? Could not find it in FAQ.

If someone can ID the snowdrop that would be great !

Des, best sort of size for pix is around 760 wide, though 800 is  okay.
That will make for quite a long photo is it is in vertical, portrait format but it is easier to scroll down a page than across it!

You will see that the pic I have resized here to be 760 pixels wide is 1017 pixels long ( deep?!)

800  (or my preferred 760)   by 600 would be the "average" size for a landscape, horizontal format picture.

See some "stuff" here : http://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=65.0

By gently curved I meant droopy (but not so droopy that the flower hangs below the spathe).  And in my experience this droopy look is not immediate but happens after the flower has matured a little.  The new photos look much more like Magnet.

Must say I've seen pots of Magnet where the flowers were on pedicels so droopy they were almost below the level of the pot, let alone the spathe....... perhaps they were feeling the heat... it was at a show.  :-X
