Yes Dave, there's a few of the little blighters around.
Surprising really with the glut of ladybirds this year.
It does show how small the flower is though with the greenfly on it lol ;D

I'm growing this one quite wet, organics and standing in water much of the time, it doesn't seem to mind.

Fred, I'm intrigued by your comment on Cyp guttatum. I've lost this a couple of times, and I'm convinced that the problem is due to an inability to keep the roots cool in summer. I'm currently growing a recently acquired Cyp yatabeanum in my usual mostly inorganic mix - do you think it would be worth trialling this in the same situation where I grow my Disas - in about a centimetre of rainwater in a large tray?

Peter,
The C. guttatum is in a peat/ perlite ( Sarracenia type) mix, with the pot standing in about 1 cm of rainwater.
I kept it this way last year in the growing season and it did increase.
If I had more I'd plonk one in one of the Sarracenia lagoons where the Disa are. ( The water is much deeper there).
From what I can gather about C. yatabeanum or as some call it C. guttatum var yatabeanum it is tollerant of more water than than C. guttatum.
Certainly worth a try in my book Peter.

The double pot method would also be worth a try.
The plant potted in a terracotta pot with your medium of choice, planted inside a larger plastic pot of live sphagnum moss ( a layer of gravel under the terracotta pot to hold it above water level) which stands in a tray of rainwater.
That would help cooling a lot.

Nice henryi Fred.
For me the stand out grex of the new stuff from Michael Wienert is Sabine alba.
Big white flowers and a quick grower. This is the third year of flowering and already 7 flowers.
Bought two years ago over winter from Jeff and flowered the first year with 1 flower and 2 growths.
Flowers open cream and fade to white,

David

Hi,

a super vigorous hybrid which came to me as a seedling of the grex Florence ( Gisela x fasciolatum) but when it flowered was another 'wrong-un'.
It only started to flower in 2010 but is already 15 growths and 12 flowers in 2012.
The plant is substantial -the pot it is growing in is 10 inches across.
Contact with the supplier failed so I'm looking for help with the identity.
The earliness of flowering suggests that it is most likely a fasiolatum cross but with what?
It could be Ursel( x henryi), Sunny ( x calceolus) or Gabriela( x kentuckiense)?
I'm tending towards the last one due to the large flowers and long droopy petals.
The side view of the flower is also reminiscent of kentuckiense.
Any views?

Thanks,

David

"Not Florence" is lovely. I'm afraid I'm Mr Rusty when it comes to identifying hybrids.

Hello,

I think you are right with Gabriela!
There were a lot of plants sold in flower-supermarkets Germany and Austria, called "kentuckiense big" that were that grex - they show only small variations.
But best was the price: I bought one with four leads for 20 Euros!

Herbert -thanks for the comments - I'll relabel the plant.
Good luck with your plant - you're lucky to find them for that price.
It looks like there is more than one producer of 'cheap' cyp. hybrids
in Europe.
It is a quick vigorous grower - last year - 7 growths with 2 flowers,
this year 15 growths and 12 flowers.
The flowers improve markedly as the plant grows.
When it first flowered I didn't think much of it at all.
Smaller growths have much paler flowers than mature growths,

David...that Gabriela sure is vigorous, Im loving any hybrid with a kentuckiense influence, taller with bigger flowers that suit warmer zones...a very nice Cyp

a question mark and a no-no

Hi,

the curse of the mislabelled cyps continues today.
First up is a lovely flower that is labelled aki light.
It is a clear yellow with a few fine red lines.
Probably nicer than the average aki light so no complaints.
It could be a yellow ventricosum.
Next up ( for Stephen ) is the pot with 2 plants of macranthos 'red russian' discussed earlier in this thread flowering for the first time.
Clearly wrong, although both are nice albums so again no complaints.
Could be macranthos album or ventricosum album,

Regards,

David

Just taking advantage of the size of photos we can post here to show a general view of the pots.
The plants have really moved this week as the temperatures have risen from 8-10 to 16-18 degrees,
though it is still pretty rainy.
Gabriela is fully out as is Sunny next to it,
