Hi,
a few plants from this week.
1. Michael. First time flowering with some stems with 3 flowers.
2. Sabine alba. Flowes now mature although each of the dorsal sepals have a few spots from rain damage.
3 and 4. 'not red russian'. Nice true alba flowers. Examination of the staminode would suggest that it is macranthos but the ovaries are pubescent which suggests ventricosum.
It could also be an alba hybrid.
Regards,
David

Stephen,
I'll contact Crustacare and see if they have an explanation.
Flowering for the second time is 'Bill' ( pubescens x tibeticum).
Not the most elegant flower but I love the colour.
Exactly the same as a good tibeticum.
Plant growth is very sturdy and a double flower on one stem so it should make a good potful in a couple of years,
Regards,
David

Hi,
yet another mislabelled plant.
Bought as Pluto but looks more like x ventricosum.
It's had a hard life and went backwards a couple of years ago so it is several years old.
Maybe the blackbirds helped relabel it some time ago and I forgot.
The petals are starting to twist so it may be a parviflorum hybrid.
Second photo is Sunny fully developed.
It is now a proper mature plant with excellent foliage.
Following is a detail of a stem of michael with 3 flowers. First time this year.
The veining on the flowers improves dramatically with plant age.
Next is Inge - this plant nearly died when I repotted it two years ago.
Not sure why.Short and stunted growths were produced for 2 seasons.First time it has flowered.
The foliage is still weak, a bit yellow and streaky.

Hi David,
I have Bill coming into flower and it looks like W Frosch's photo with a lot of orange on the bowl. Certainly not pure red.

Jeff,
my plant came from Frank at Floralpin. With the range of variation shown by
tibeticum I'm not surprised that there is some variation in the flower colour.
However this plant is much darker than Werner's photos.
The shape and plant is about what you'd expect from the cross - just the colour is different.
Frank has a good range of species - maybe he has some very dark tibeticum and pubescens clones.
Could it be a cross using something approaching corrugatum in colour?
A couple of photos of the pot of unknown white cyps.
Both plants are true albas - no trace of colour.
Whatever they are, I'm pleased with them.

David

macranthos var rebunense

Hi,
I've just been told by the breeder that the two white cyps are macranthos var rebunense.
Very nice surprise as they're pretty impossible to source normally.
I thought that rebunense only occured in the cream form.
Nice to find that one of several mislabelled cyps is a real winner,

David

Maren,
is that your plant? It's lovely.
I have my doubts about my plant as well. The petals seem a bit long for rebunense
and the ovary is hairy - more like x ventricosum.
However it does look like the white rebunense on the crustacare web site.
Anyway, whatever it is, It's a pure white cyp. so I'm happy,
Regards,
David

Hello Maren, thank you for the excellent picture, very beautiful flower!
But I want to know if you purchased it from Japan? I have a flower which seems same as yours...my plant is from Heilongjiang of China....
The second picture is from my Japanese supplier, I purchased 3 rebunense in the last season, 2 were flowered in new house in the last week, 100% same as the picture showed, yellow, big, round. Myself's flower was withered before opening, but the plants is showed in the 3rd and 4th pictures.

Hi,
nice photos of more rebunense. Interesting to speculate just what constitutes 'rebunense'.
Maren's plant is white flowered but most seem to be a creamy yellow.
Anybody know whether all the cyp macranthos plants on the island of Rebun are either yellow or white?
Or are there red forms but these don't have the appeal of the other two?
I'll see if I can find out any more on the origin of mine.
First photo is Achim (pubescens x froschii). Very similar to Aki (pubescens x macranthos). The flowers are quite large and seem to vary in colour from one to another. Some are these almost peach and others more reddish.
Next is another clone of Sunny from a separate cross to the previous one posted. Quite a different flower. Paler lip and darker petals. Much smaller plant.
Next is one of Michael Wienert's x ventricosum 'pale'. Second year flowering and up to three flowers on sturdy stems. A nice vigorous grex with good sized flowers.
Lastly is a division of tibeticum from a well know breeder. Nice big flowers on vigorous plant, now up to twelve stems though only four will flower. The flowers look to be identical to the ones on offer from Holger Perner for the last couple of years,
Regards,
David
