Regelias 2012
« on: April 20, 2012, 03:51:15 AM »
My first regelia of the season opened yesterday. My records say it is Iris stolonifera from Paul Christian Rare Plants in the UK. My first reaction was incredulity, as I've never seen a form of I. stolonifera (plant or photograph) that was so nearly self colored, with only a hint of venation and almost no brown. I wondered if it were a hoogiana instead. A web search brought up a photo of stolonifera on a Russian site that looks nearly identical to this, as well as a couple that had only slightly more veining and brown coloring. I'm now inclined to think it is in fact stolonifera, just a rather unusual color form.

Would be interested in the opinion of other forumists.

Your picture looks more like what I know as hoogiana Tom, limited material. The Russian picture has a different beard and the falls are slightly more like stolonifera... Has your plant tucked it's falls under, in the way that stolonifera does?

Thankyou Jan. Iris stolonifera can survive wet Summers here, I have not tried I lineata out-side yet...

Tom yours looks like a form of hoogiana.  The stoli on the Russian site
looks like a very advanced generation from stolonifera x stolonifera
breeding. Elm Jensen has some similar to it.  I'm waiting for him to
get some of them introduced. He has a beautiful red and some brown ones.

The Paul Christian Rare Plants website I got this from says they raised these from seed each year to ensure virus-free stock, so it's possible that some hoogiana pollen was involved, I suppose.

Peter, the bloom is fading now but it retained the form shown in the photo, no tucking.
