Dwarf Bearded Iris ID?
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:07:25 PM »
Anyone put a name to these. One day I will find a method of keeping labels.

They both look quite familiar but.....
It may well be that you in the UK have more British bred varieties while we tend to have American hybrids, but since breeders everywhere seem to follow similar lines, the results are much the same, until we have to remember the names. Then 2 or more names SEEM to apply to the same plant.

Don't know sorry, but I've got two yellow ones very similar.  One has a name of Willow Mist SDB - no idea what SDB stands for.  The other was just labelled dwarf yellow iris on the HPS sale table when I bought it.  I'll try to photo them today...

Chris,

SDB means "Standard Dwarf Bearded" (all bearded hybrids between 21-40 cm tall are SDB's).

There's also MDB "Miniature Dwarf Bearded" (10-20 cm tall), IB "Intermediate Bearded" (41-70 cm tall), MTB "Miniature Tall Bearded" (= Table Irisses, 41-70 cm tall, but with more elegant and smaller flowers than IB) and TB "Tall Bearded" (taller than 70 cm)

The top one  of those two is Green Spot, but which one the other is........not found it yet.
Saw it today at Bridgemere G/C. at £5.99. I sell it at £1.50 when I split and pot it up.

I'm inclined to think the top pic is not 'Green Spot,' which as we have it in NZ at any rate - and have had for well ovr 50 years, (I've had it that long) has a really GRASS green spot, not limey green like that one and not a veined patch but quite smooth and solid colouring. Should have a picture somewhere. It's always been a favourite of mine.

My own recollection of 'Green Spot' is not quite accurate but may I suggest you Google and go to Dave's garden where there are a few pics which are right. GS is oldish, bred in the States in 1951 so it has lasted the test of time.

I love 'Knick Knack,' a really tidy and charming little iris with lovely markings. You have a really nice clump Chris.

It was certainly bought a long time ago, probably before we moved here, so at least 20 years ago, as Green Spot. And the one we saw in the G/C. (no recommendation really I suppose) was exactly the same. Perhaps there are ones going around here masquerading as the real thing?
I did Google images of it and I have to say that the ones I found compared favourably with a brought in flower of ours rather than with the picture I took, if you see what I mean.
Interesting that the only other Iris in flower was Knick-knack and we were trying to find a name for that one too.

Changing the title of this thread to avoid confusion with the "regular" D/BI thread in the Iris section  ;)
