Iris form id.
« on: May 14, 2012, 09:19:11 PM »
I got this Iris and the label says Capt. Collingwood Ingram, but I can find no information on it, as to what type of iris it is. Anyone know it?

It is about 1.5 inches across and say 2 inches tall.

Sounds like your Iris may have a  good provenance.....

This is the American Iris Society wiki where most irises would be found - if you have a name.

yes, i confirm, iris cristata, an american species.

i find it prefers half shade in a humus rich spot with lots of space for the small rhizomes to creep around. however, i find that it spreads very slowly...lets say slowly but steadily once settled.

mine are also now in flower amonghst convallaria auro striata..a nice mix!

Thanks folks. So the question is, is it a special form of I, cristata or just the standard one to which someone has attached a name? The species is mentioned in Claire Austin's book and she does say it comes in different shades of blues/lilac, but she does not give any varietal names.

Sounds to me like the iris had some connection with the Captain... from his garden, don't you think? That's usually how plants get people's names attached.
