Visit to Hestercombe, Somerset
« on: July 05, 2012, 11:05:34 PM »
Hestercombe is a landscape garden complemented by a Victorian terrace and shrubbery added in the 1870s and by the creation of the Edwardian gardens designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll between 1904 and 1908.  The original ‘Lutyens Benches’ were designed for this garden.  The inclusion of a rill was the first time it had been used in a garden design.

A charming place, David, which you have captured very well. Selfishly, since I have never been, I really appreciate these reports!

Thank you Maggi.  We spent more than four hours there and fortunately trudged up the woodland walk to the top of the hill first before looking at the formal gardens.  Difficult day for photography too - a mixture of strong sun and lots of dark clouds.

Thanks for showing us this garden, David.
Do you think it would be worth visiting in May?
Maybe we can visit after the Prague Conference.
cheers

I think it would rather depend on when in May.  I am sure there is something to see most seasons.  The walk round the wooded area would always be good on a nice day.  Whether the trees would be in full leaf early in May rather depends on what sort of winter we have. As to the formal garden I would expect that is planted up for all seasons so would think spring flowers and perhaps even early summer varieties in later May and as it is south west England would probably be earlier than us here in the east .  Would be worth asking them perhaps?  e-mail:  info@hestercombe.com
