cyclamen hederifolium flowering in july!
« on: July 14, 2012, 05:22:43 PM »
Hello Everyone,

this year, my cyclamen hederifolium 'red sky' in the ground started flowering at the end of june! i now have 2 corms in full bloom! usually these dont start flowering untill late august/early september. The corms in pots are all starting to show buds...why is this? could it be because of the strange alternating cold and warm weather we have had lately? i even have some ordinary hederiflorum showing buds alrady....very strange...

my cyclamen purpurascens has started flowering as usual now, but that is normal here....

C. hederifolium in the open garden is coming into flower here - about 2-3 weeks early. I presume this is a consequence of the very wet summer.

This Cyclamen hederifolium flowers sins three weeks
I planted it under a Rosmarinus officinalis Prostratus
a place what he likes together with Gladiolus communis subsp. byzantinus

the bad thing
the Rosmarinus officinalis Prostratus almost died last winter
it's regrowing a little
but probably I have to renew the plant

Cyclamen hederifolium is always early in my garden, I think it is because my garden is mainly damp and shady.  I can usually calculate the first flower by the following method: After a heavy rainstorm at the end of June, I count 10 days and the first C hederifolium will be in flower within a couple of days.  This year my method failed as the whole of June was heavy rainstorms.  They actually started a bit later this year than usual here, first flower was on 12 July.

I suspect Diane's hit it. Rain is signaling the end of dormancy--regardless of temperature or the month of the year.

Had a look after reading this and there are 2 in flower. these are in shade, but the ones in more sunnier spots are doing nothing, yet.
