unknown Colchicum
« on: October 28, 2007, 08:02:00 PM »
Hi all ,

Here is a pic of a unknown Colchicum which I have found in the mountains of Karpathos - on a altitude of 1200 m .
I know the quality is not the best .....but it is not always easy to take pic in the wild !
We have found only this one flowering plant !!!
The size of the flower is like a Crocus !
Could this be C. cretensis ?

Thank you for any ideas
Hans

Hans could your first unknown be Colchicum baytopiorum?  I grow a form of this with smallish flowers and bright yellow markings in the throat.

A link to an article on Colchicum in Turkey - which is just over the water:

Hi Antony + Tony ,

Thank you for your comments .
I have not found much pics of C. cretense - my idea was only that Karpathos is not so far from Crete ....
The  link interesting about Colchicum in Turkey is interesting .....but there no pics !
I googled for a pic but I found it is a bit different - maybe it is a new species -I think this island has not visit so much botanists .
Karpathos is not so very near Turkey -it is between Crete and Rhodes
