I grow mine in lavarock, perlite, a bit of sand, and peat.

The problem I have is I do not get cold enough so I cannot grow things like Cyp. reginae

Bontanica those pictures are lovely, mine are all looking sad. All the foliage is dying back. I hope I will get a better display next year. My foliage was very pale. I have given them a good feed so hopefully there will be some nice new growth for next year. Hope so anyway.

if the foliage of your cyps was pale at the height of the growing season, then an application of Epsom Salts will help. I do this twice a year and the colour has improved significantly.

Maren , i don't know this technique .
I've looking for this product and epsomite is (MgSO4·7H2O), commonly called Epsom salt...that right.
It's only Magnesium sulfate in fact.

For me ...only crushed horn and my compost ..i place the plants in a shady place too keep the foliage very green and my plantss are not burn in this periode.
I think, plants could make much photosynthètis and could be much stronger in the next season..you know ?

Chuck, the Cyp are able too live in Californie..I know  Cypripedium californicum in your region but not others .. Your cyp are in your garden or in pots ?
What species of Cyp have you ? cypripedium montanum and Cypripedium californicum that's all ?

Botanica I grow my Cyps, in pots. I do have a couple of small plants that I dug into the garden to see how they go. I got some lovely plants from Anthony D. before he headed of to sunnier climates. I really enjoy growing these and I am starting to get a nice collection.
I will post the names of the ones that I am growing.

Maren, somebody that knows what they are doing with orchids kindly gave me that advice  I will have to try and remember to do this next year again.

Cyp. californicum is what I have. Friends have grown Cyp. formosanum, Cyp. kentuckiense, and Cyp. pubescens. Cyp. californicum, Cypripedium fasciculatum, and Cyp. montanum are in the wild here but they are in a different climate zone than me so it is more difficult to grow some of them since we do not get the chill hours.

We have chance in Europ because the Climat in the north of France able to cultivate many species of Cypripedium.
The winter must be very hard (-22°C this year) and +35°C some days .
I cultivate my cypri in a middle shading place.
For irrigation, no problem generally  because mother nature do that  ! But some watering occasionally .

I have written to the distributors of puzzolane but they quoted €800+ for a cubic metre (big bag) and that is just too expensive for me. Pity, the material looks very promising and I see you have it on your plants.

Maren, puzzolane is a porous volcanic lava rock type. Why don't you search for lava rock used in pond filters. The material looks almost the same and is much cheaper. A big bag of this lava rock for use in pond filters (8-16 mm) costs 100 to 150 euro's here.
