Part of our little collection of Crocosmia
« on: September 08, 2012, 03:39:21 PM »
We thought we would post a few photos of our Crocosmia collection to show people just how beautiful these plants can be. When the word Crocosmia is mentioned, straight away people think 'That horrible orange one that spreads everywhere'!!!
Well, how wrong they can be.
Here are a few pics of some very nicely behaved plants that just as many do, form a nice little clump.

Very nice photo..............

Not all Crocosmia are cheap. I have in the past paid £12 for a corm of a species plant!

Hello Mark

I have visited you website, it's a very large collection of croscomia you have !

I see that not at all are cheap exactly , the price of some species is  :o :o

But if i compare of Cypripedium price, not excessive.

I prefered the CROCOSMIA 'ROSEA' for original color.

There are not color green, black, or blue existing in this plant ?

I see you have some other plant in your garden,  have you some seed of Digitalis Parviflora and Lindelofia Longifolia for exchange.  ;)

I search some species of Digitalis ! (It's not for my Germination project for this ..)

I have Purpurea, grandiflora, lutea and a forumist does send me digitalis ferruginea.

I seach digitalis lanata too ....if an member have some seed for me it's very cool  ;).

You have Full National Collection status ...incredible , i am certain that it's does very diffcult to be accepted ! ???

It's a consecration for you and your wife !

See you soon mark

Yes they are super plants for this time of year. They really stand out in the borders. We visited Holden Clough Nursery in The trough of Boland, Lancs last week to add some to our collection. They say they have 140 varieties and certainly their display was magnificent.

These are plants that seem to thrive in our wet conditions and reasonably mild (most years) winters

Not sure about the comment on prices ,they seem very reasonable.

And what a super time we had  ;D Firstly, thanks to you and Lauri for your warm welcome, guided tour, in depth explanations and huge generosity that made our visit most worthwhile. We both found your garden most interesting and admire the holistic way in which you garden. Obviously the Crocosmia are the stars of the show, and you're correct Mark, I was amazed with the numbers, and also the variety of form and colour, that you have in your collection. Seeing the enormous blaze of colour created by the hundreds of flowering plants, side by side in the growing area, left a big impression with me also.
We both managed to secure some superb plants,  8) and certainly I left having learned a lot.
Absolutely Amazing Mr ........Crocosmia  ;D ;D ;D

p.s. our very best wishes for your fund raising for the Hedgehog charity. What an incredible story!

We are so pleased that you came over for a visit.
Pleased also that you liked the garden and the tour round the allotment!!!

Hope you enjoy the books on Glads and crocosmia.

Anyway, thanks again for coming, and it really was lovely to meet you both. Remember the kettle is always on!!!  ;)

Yesyterday was pretty quiet, but today we made a bit for the Hedgehogs.............. will let you know when its over, Ron  :)

Would it be better to plant the pot grown plants now or in the spring? I am hoping to split the C. pottsii into two ( as I think I have the perfect spot for them to grow into ) but should perhaps wait until they have died down?  Is it then too late to plant in the ground?

You can plant the pot now if you want to Ron.............. still has time for it to spead its roots a bit before the frosts. If you wait for it to die down it may be too late!
We have an extra Pottsii if you want it.???? just say and its yours!!! LOL

That's what I'll do then Mark, plant the C.pottsii and the C.paniculata right away and see how they develop through next year.  If anyone else takes the spare C.pottsii  thats great, if not I'll certainly buy it next time I'm with you. I have a fair bit of space ready for it! ;D It is a beauty. 8) Six feet plus?
Is it accepted that there are only eight species of Crocosmia? How rare are the species in cultivation?
Thanks for the ongoing advice,  :) 8)

You can have the Pottsii mate.............. will post it to you if you want! Will be sent bare root, so you will have to pot it up and plant it next year!

Yes there are 8 species plants........... 4 are normally used for breeding todays hybrids (Masoniorum, Paniculata, Aurea and Pottsii) Have all these.
The others, well lets say rocking horse poo is easier to find.
They are Pearsii, Matthewsiana, Fucata and Ambongensis of which i have 2 of these.........
