I recommend Dryad for the lovely bulbs that are supplied

Mark

Dryad Nursery was new to me so I googled it.  Would someone kindly hit me with a mallet? ::)  Now it's not quite so annew.

I agree with the comments about Avon bulbs, good sized bulbs and a very friendly, helpful service.
As also mentioned, Wol and Sue Staines supply very good bulbs. I've also been impressed with bulbs supplied by Ian Christie....another one I can recommend. I've had a few disappointments from other suppliers, either small bulbs provided or they're not true to name which is a little frustrating to say the least.

I haven't used Dryad Nursery but certainly shall do now  :)

are there any good galanthus from the gold group on the list? I am looking for a few to increase my small galanthus collection.

So far, I have only managed to get hold of 3 wendy's gold that i am looking forward to see pop through the ground next year :)

Pontus

Pontus, you might want to check Ian Christie's woronowii 'Elisabeth Harrison'. He has some other good and nice yellows too, if Elisabeth is a bit too demanding on your budget :-\ .

My Avon Bulbs catalogue arrived on Saturday and quickly made a shortlist of snowdrops but at well over £300, this is too much. I can perhaps afford £120- £130. So just for fun and advice which ones would you recommend and why? Below is my list with price in brackets.

Comet (!5)
Cowhouse Green (25)
Diggory (25)
Fly Fishing (25)
Gerard Parker (12)
Hercule (30)
Honeysuckle mCottage (7)
Irish Green (25)
Kildare (20)
Louise Anne Bromley (40)
Primrose Warburg (22)
Robin Hood (10)
Spindlestone Surprise (22)
Sprite (40)
Sutton Courtenay (20)
Trymming (40)

Thanks in advance.

Gary - to me one of the key questions would be "which of these is likely to thrive in my garden/soil?", always a difficult question to answer unless you have seen the variety growing in a local garden.

Of your list I only have Diggory and Robin Hood. Diggory was new to me last year and has appeared with three strong noses this year, I think it is a great flower and therefore would recommend it.

Robin Hood was given to me a couple of years ago and has not flowered or increased well - I will try it in a different spot next year. The forumist that gave it to me said that for him it had a weak stem and tended to flop. So I would hesitate to recommend this one.

My garden has a heavy clay soil but gets very dry in the summer.

Please let us all know which ones you decide on.

I would definitely have Sutton Courtenay, everyone who sees it here wants it :)
Trymming is a good one too and seems to increase well.

Thanks for the responses so far. Yes Mark, I have read that Primrose Warburg and Spindelestone Surprise are almost indistinguishable. Is it correct that Spindlestone is supposed to be the most vigorous?
Chris I have planted around 70 varieties of Galanthus during the last three years and seem to have had a good success rate, perhaps losing around 3-4 at most, so most seem to do well in my variable soil. I try to plant in the well drained areas. Some are very slow e.g Three Ships one flower to two flowers in 3 years. Most are increasing at a faster rate and at the other end of the scale is Wasp increasing from one to 8 or more in the same period.
Brian, Sutton Courtenay and Trymming are near the top of my list but it all depends on the availability when I order on 3rd January.

That's a good success rate Gary, sounds like Wasp is one to try here.

Does anybody grow Honeysuckle Cottage? I feel I should try that one as that's the name of this house.

Chris

I'm chuckling away here at what you have written, Chris, as Mary ordered this snowdrop from Avon Bulbs last year purely on the strength of its name. It just shows the importance of choosing an attractive name for a plant and how it will promote sales.
